By taking the phenomenon of “planking” and “flashmobbing” which take place around the world as instances, this article attempts to analyze what is the “affect” that circulates these activities in such a contagious fashion. Are these activities a way to communicate or to resist a certain boredom? Are they an alternative form of addiction? Or, are they a visual competition for stupidity in the new media age? This article attempts to ask, further, what is the difference between the aesthetics (or non-aesthetics) of these activities and that of the performance art? What is the difference between their public intervention and that of a political gathering or action? Is their purpose simply to make-fun or is there any other peculiarity? Can they be defined with a purpose or are they thoroughly non-teleological? Besides, through interpreting these new media age activities, this article proposes a new way to explicate the concept of “experience,” which is a rewriting of Walter Benjamin’s “poverty of experience.” Finally, this article also discusses the taking-place of flashmobbing in non-democratic societies, in which the uncertain form of this activity is exactly why it is often led into contrary interpretations (political and non-political).
